KUALA LUMPUR, (D5 Sports) - Malaysia's Tan Chun Seang was forced to retire from the Macau Open Grand Prix after fracturing his ankle in the first round.

While there is remorse for the Kedah player, Liew Daren rose to a new high by chalking an impressive win to reach the third round.

Chun Seang was trailing his opponent Hsieh Yu-hsing of Taiwan 11-21, 13-16 before disaster struck, forcing him out.

According to national singles coach Teh Siew Bock, Chun Seang will be sent home to get a detailed assessment on his injury.

On the other hand, Liew Daren showed a rare form to pull a surprise 13-21, 21-13, 21-19 win over P. Kashyap of India to advance.

Daren will face Wong Wing Ki of Hong Kong next, and has a good chance of making it into the quarter-finals.

World number one Lee Chong Wei and veteran Wong Choong Hann also progressed to the third round with convincing wins yesterday.

Today, Chong Wei will take on Thai youngster Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk while Choong Hann will face Hsing Hsieh-yu of Taiwan.

In the men's doubles, Malaysia saw three casualties, reducing the national charge to only four pairs through Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah, Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah.
